The Kāhui Manu Tāiko — comprising Hokotehi Moriori Trust, Ngāti Mutunga o Wharekauri Iwi Trust, Chatham Islands Council, and Chatham Islands Enterprise Trust — has released the Chatham Islands Strategy 2024–28.
Developed in the spirit of kotahitanga/hokotehitanga, this strategy represents the collective voice of the islands and sets out a shared vision for the community: a thriving Chatham Islands where together we can achieve a better future for our people and our islands.
The strategy takes a wellbeing approach across five outcome areas — infrastructure, economic, environment, social, and cultural — and identifies priority investment areas and flagship projects to be delivered by 2028 in partnership with central government.
Three flagship projects have been prioritised:
- Delivery of the Islands’ Renewable Energy project
- Building and improving housing on the Chatham Islands
- Delivery of a replacement shipping solution
The strategy will be monitored through the Chatham Islands Stakeholder Forum and is intended as a living document, evolving as priorities are achieved and community needs change.
