OUR TOHU

This concept design takes the form of a flame as a symbol of gathering and connecting around the fire to korero about vital kaupapa.

The overall form is created with two key parts. The first part being the free flowing line weights (Orange sections) drawing the eyes in an upward direction. Showing the natural rising movement of a flame as a gesture of uplifting the wellbeing for all whānau.

The second part features the element of water designed as an interlocking puhoro pattern. The interlocking aspect is an expression of whanaungatanga. Showing a sense of people gathering, connecting and supporting each other.

The puhoro pattern often seen on the hull of a waka has a strong association to the movement of water, symbolising Wāina Pono and Wai Tai (Sea water). Waina Pono represents the connection of Moriori to the land as the indigenous people seen in the Light Blue. The darker tone Blue is Wai Tai which represents the connection of Ngāti Mutunga to the land.

The use of the two elements Fire and Water speaks to the principles of balance, fairness and sharing a space. Not too far one way or the other way.

Sense of connection – Whanaungatanga

Light from the flame in darkness – Kaitiakitanga

Uplifting and warm – Manaakitanga

Movement – Mouri Ora

Waina Pono – Indigenous people/identity as Moriori
